This is an open letter to every person who ever felt his or her leader failed them.
I would like to apologize for not always being the leader you hoped for, and I’m even more sorry for having sometimes failed you in what you entrusted me with: helping you become better leaders.
To be honest, at times I failed to understand the difference between a great manager and a great leader. I haven’t been able to grasp the whole concept of what a leader is and spot the differences between them. However, wisdom may come from different sources, and when I fail I like to think of it as an opportunity to learn and get better.
I wish that you also fail from time to time, in order to get the chance to experience what it’s like to learn and understand yourself better through getting over hard times.
How to run a meeting with your team, how to create a tracking tool, how to organize your time to get the most of – they’re all things you can find on the web, all you need to do is type it out in a search engine. What you learn beyond that though – that’s what really matters. I hope I didn’t fail in fostering your curiosity to go past what you’re taught in school.
Whenever I failed…
In getting you pumped up I understood that I’ve done you wrong trying to simply motivate you, as if carrots and sticks could help you unleash your true potential. All I needed to do was to inspire you to become better for a cause, for a greater purpose. And inspiration isn’t just leading by example, but helping you connect to the bigger picture, to let you know that “what we do in life echoes in eternity.”
Lastly, I apologize for having failed to understand that the greatest feeling in the world, as a team leader, isn’t seeing myself grow, but watching the people you lead and work with grow with you.
Know that you have the power and capability to learn and understand what it takes to be a good leader. Take this experience to turn yourself into the greatest one you could possibly, for every person that’s going to be led by you throughout your life. Understand you have the power to empower them and provide the most remarkable team experience they could have.
